Family Law Firm, King of Prussia’s Vetrano|Vetrano & Feinman LLC Explores the Reasons for the Recent Trend of Divorce in Individuals over the Age of 50

In the 1950’s it was believed that in order to be a proper housewife you needed to settle down young, marry a husband with a good paying job, and start working on a family. Marriage was common practice and something that most women aspired to achieve. Unfortunately, their aspirations never progressed past raising and nurturing a family so as time and social norms changed more and more people found their relationships unsatisfactory and their roles in the family unsatisfactory. More couples began getting divorced. Now in 2014, there is a widespread divorce trend among couples over the age of 50 and family law firm, King of Prussia’s Vetrano|Vetrano & Feinman LLC, explains why this is the case.

1. On Average We Are Living Longer Lives

Merely a century ago, the life expectancy of an American was only 44 years. Now people all across the world are living well into their 70s. Many couples find that when they got married in their 20s they were different people, young and unaware of all the changes they would overcome throughout their lives. Jobs and other interests caused them to develop new personalities that turned out to be quite contrasting to their spouses. It is not uncommon for people change and sometimes there seems to be no reasonable option other than to get a divorce and do what they feel will make them happier.

2. Social Norms Have Been Rapidly Changing Over the Past Few Decades

Even at the age of 50 or older, individuals who are unhappy in their marriages may decide that they need to spend more time understanding and developing themselves. Whether that means exploring the world, starting a new career, or just simply working on their own personal growth, they are entitled to these opportunities. Marriage is no longer something that society requires of individuals and divorce certainly is not frowned upon as much as it once was.

3. Postmenopausal Women Experience a Psychological Change

Most people believe that divorces in older couples are the result of husbands wanting to find younger and more attractive wives, but this is not often the case. A recent study has actually found that 65% of divorces in couples over the age of 50 are initiated by women. It is assumed that this is due to the fact that once women reach a postmenopausal state they no longer feel the need to ensure that their family is one cohesive unit. Their children have reached the age of adulthood and no longer need their aid so they seek out more fulfilling pursuits, especially if they are unhappy in their marriages.
Although it is more and more common for couples to get divorced over the age of 50, it does not make the divorce process any simpler. A wide number of factors need to be considered when getting a divorce in one’s later years including the division of retirement benefits, home ownership, estate planning, and timing of social security benefits and Medicare , rehabilitative alimony or long term alimony to meet needs of a dependent spouse, to name a few. In order to ensure a smooth divorce, it is recommended that individuals contact a dependable family law firm. King of Prussia’s Vetrano & Vetrano has been successfully representing clients in divorce cases for over 30 years and know how to properly handle these delicate family situations.
